Quinte, On. real estate agent: Disturb us, Lord

Disturb us, Lord

I recently stumbled upon a prayer attributed to the famous English sailor, Sir Francis Drake. I never really paid all that much attention to history as a student, and I used to confuse him with Sir Walter Ralleigh, in much the same way that I mix up Kevin Costner and Mark Harmon. I found this prayer to be very motivational, and it led me to brush up on my knowledge of this man. I'm glad I took the time to do so because he's an interesting man.

Disturb us, Lord, when
We are too well pleased with ourselves,
When our dreams have come true
Because we have dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely
Because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord, when
With the abundance of things we possess
We have lost our thirst
For the waters of life;
Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
We have allowed our vision
Of the new Heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,
To venture on wider seas
Where storms will show your mastery;
Where losing sight of land,
We shall find the stars.

We ask You to push back
The horizons of our hopes;
And to push into the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.

Simply beautiful words... thank you for sharing them with us.  Reminds me of the phrase... "God smiles when we make plans."

Malcolm,

Beautiful poem....and very fitting for today's world. Thank you for the history lesson. I knew very little about Sir Francis Drake (guess I didn't pay that much attention in history class either) ((-;

Nice!  Drake's beach (Point Reyes National Seashore) is about 30 miles from my house, so I should really know more about this chapter in history.  You really have to admire the explorers who believed in something they couldn't see.  They just knew, somehow, that there was something out there that had not yet been discovered.

Malcolm,

A few well chosen words can last forever. The point of the message will evolve with society.

Hi Malcolm,

Great poem. I particularly like:

Disturb us, Lord, when
We are too well pleased with ourselves,
When our dreams have come true
Because we have dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely
Because we sailed too close to the shore.

Tells us to keep pushing, keep moving forward, which are words of wisdom, indeed.

Laxson Realty l La Jolla Real Estate Hi Susan, yes I think that's what the poem means.

Jo-Anne Smith- Oakville, Burlington and Mississauga Region Real Estate, Ont (Brekland Realty Group) Jo, there's so many fascinating things on this planet that I wish I had taken the time to pay more attention.

Cynthia Larsen - Sonoma County Real Estate, CA (Safe Haven Realty) Yes, they really did have to have a lot of faith to keep pushing the boundaries like that.

Brian Madigan LL.B. (Royal LePage Innovators Realty, Broker) That's the truth Brian, very well put.

Pam McInnes (Peak Realty Ltd., Waterloo, Ontario, CANADA) I like that part too Pam. We should push ourselves and not be leased when things come too easily.

Janice Ankrett ASP (Janice Ankrett Home Staging) You're welcome Janice, I thought it was inspirational too, especially coming from someone who I wouldn't have thought would have been particularly spiritual.

Malcolm

I had this passage framed and posted on the galley door on my sailboat and when it was white knuckle time, I would try to remember it.

Even pirates get spirtual when you are on an ocean regardless of storms or calms. You end up respecting nature in a hurry

Envelope Real Estate Brokerage Inc What an appropriate place Ty. You're right, even the hardest among us become a little spiritual when the going gets rough.
