Quinte, On. real estate agent: Canada's Highway of Heroes

Canada's Highway of Heroes

As most of you who have read my blog are aware, I live in Trenton, Ontario. Trenton is home to C.F.B. (Canadian Forces Base) Trenton. C.F.B. Trenton is Canada's largest airforce base, and as such is the home to 8 Wing squadron, the unit responsible for the Herculese and other transport aircraft.

One of the unenviable tasks of C.F.B. Trenton is to be the site for the repatriation ceremonies for our fallen soldiers. Today we had another repatriation. I try to go whenever possible. Civilians are allowed to stand outside the fence to pay our respects, and whether it's in the middle of winter or the middle of summer, hundreds of civilians show up. Today we had to pay our respects to Sgt. Martin Goudreault who was killed by a landmine in Afghanistan.

The stretch of highway between Trenton and Toronto (about 160 kms) is called "The Highway of Heroes", because this is the route that the vehicle transporting the fallen soldier will take when taking the body to the Chief Coroner of Ontario in Toronto. Trenton is not the only town that comes out to show their respect. Every overpass along the highway is filled with people from nearby towns, and every police force and fire department is represented. In downtown Toronto, the streets are lined with people too. It seems to be the very least we can do to honour these brave men and women.

Sgt. Martin Goudreault is Canada's 147th casualty in Afghanistan. I hope this is the last time I will have to go and stand by that fence.

Here is a video that someone put together last year about Canada's "Highway of Heroes".

Can't see the video due to technical problems on my end, but I appreciate the story, Malcolm.  More than that, I appreciate your going out there on behalf of all Canadians to pay your respects to these men and women.  All my best.

Thank you for your tribute to our heroes.  I have seen clips on the news but have never had the privilege of being there in person.  It would be my prayer that I would never have the occasion to do so in the future.

Malcolm,

The Mayor of Toronto just dedicated a portion of the Don Valley Parkway as the "Route of Heroes".

It just seems to be political opportunism, when there was already something that was serious, and dedicated to this tribute in place.

Hey Malcolm:

Thanks for the post.  I go to as many as possible.  To be honest I do not miss many because I have two sons that serve and this hits to close to home.  My first repat I went to was in August 2006.  It never gets any easier.

It's actually very sobering to watch, anyway, but it's surreal to see essentially the same customs but draped in the red maple leaf instead of "my usual" red, white, & blue stars and stripes.

It's really a good reminder that we're all human, no matter the country, no matter the side.  I sure wish that human nature allowed us to be...more humane to each other.

We're really fortunate that we have so many people that are willing to sacrifice their lives for us.  It's entirely unfortunate they're necessary.

Touching video Malcolm. I've seen it on bridges in Burlington too when these  local fallen heros are on thier way home.

Chris Wechner (Section 8 Pros) I also wish that we were more humane to each other too Chris. I also wish we understood that people on the "other side" of the conflict are human beings with motives as well. However, I'm paying my respect to the soldier, not necessarily to the mindset that sends the soldier in harm's way.  We are lucky to have them.

Janice Ankrett ASP (Janice Ankrett Home Staging) Yes Janice, I would hope that every community honours their own. It's nice to know that some do.
