Quinte, On. real estate agent: Let Our Leaders Know That We Care

Let Our Leaders Know That We Care

There is a lot of attention focused on Toronto and the surrounding area right now due to the G20 summit. The leaders of the largest and most influential economies in the world are gathered to discuss the major issues of the day. There's a lot to discuss these days. With all the problems we are having in our own countries it might be easy to forget our promises that we made to those less fortunate than ourselves

For centuries we have exploited the developing nations. We have a fantastic standard of living, and it's in large part because we were able to plunder their resources for so long. We still do. The system of "aid" we have in place is an outrage. The majority of aid that Canada gives to the developing world is "tied aid", where we can crow about how many billions in aid we are giving, yet the majority of the money doesn't leave Canada. The staggering debt that is crushing some developing nations has prompted the IMF (Infant Mortality Fund) to force them to cap internal spending on things such as health, education, and programs that would help their citizens, while keeping up their loan payments. I always thought that when giving, the left hand should not know what the right is doing.

8.8 million children younger than 5 died in 2008 from mostly preventable health issues such as pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria, malnutrition and complications at birth. Another 500,000 moms died in pregnancy, and during or after childbirth. We would not allow this to happen if they were Canadian women and children

The UN’s Millennium Development Goal is to reduce child deaths by two-thirds by 2015. Known, cost-effective solutions could save more than 16,000 lives every day. With the world's leaders congregated in our country right now, it would be a good time to let your member of parliament know that as a nation, we are committed to doing our part in reaching this goal, and not letting it slide into oblivion like so many promises of the past. You can fill out this little form, it will only take a couple of minutes, and let your member of parliament know that this is important to you as a Canadian. Lets speak up for those whose voices can't be heard.

Very compelling Malcolm and thank you for posting.  I believe all nations need to globally make the economic decision to set priorities and be disciplined.  There will always be need, there should never be hunger.

Larry Lawfer (EXIT Realty Metro Dallas) Thanks Larry, you are absolutely right. We should be disciplined with what we have. I would never advocate giving aid without conditions, but those conditions should not be selfish ones, they should benefit everybody.

Malcolm Johnston (Remax Trent Valley, Trenton, Ontario):  As usual, you provide a keen insight, Malcolm.

I've often been intellectually embarrassed by the fact that it seems like the world collectively has so much more than enough resources to help provide all humans with basic physiological needs:  water, food, shelter, and basic health.

I don't agree with "handouts" containing more than a person deserves, but every person deserves these basic things.

I'm not sure how things are about this in Canada, but I know that the US has plenty of people who are missing some or all of these basic needs.  It's a shame that we need our government to provide a half-baked response (i.e. our nationalized health care plan that nobody seems to really know what it will provide).  If all of us neighbors worked together and handled those funds and efforts correctly, THAT could be our plan.

I hope things are better in Canada.  Knowing that humans are humans, I'm guessing it might be but only a little.

Thank you for your breath of humanity.

Malcolm, To some extent over the last few days, the anarchists have taken away free speech from those legitimate protestors with real issues. Brian

Will sign the form Malcolm.  "the majority of the money doesn't leave Canada" this fact stuns us.  In some ways it is as if the people taking our money are stealing. We give excepting it to get to the aid of the people in who we give it to.

Chris Wechner (Section 8 Pros) Hi Chris, no things aren't too much better in Canada. There are people who lack certain things here too, but at least they have a voice and organizations that speak for them. In developing nations poor people have no one looking after their interests, not even their own governments.

Brian Madigan LL.B. (Royal LePage Innovators Realty, Broker) Brian, those idiots sure made the headlines. It will be interesting to see just exactly who they are (when they are caught).

Al and Peggy Cunningham, Brokers Voted Best Real Estate People Brampton (RE/MAX Realty Services Inc. Buying or Selling) It is rather disappointing Al and Peggy, only about 40 % of all the developmental aid in the world is untied. The other 60 % is used for the political and economic gain of the donor nation. That's hardly aid at all. When the cold war ended, American aid to Africa dropped to less than half of what it was because they didn't need to "buy" their allies in Africa any more.
